Why the four hour arrival window exists
It was never about convenience. It is a scheduling problem that got passed to the customer.
Nobody sat down and decided customers should surrender half a day waiting. The arrival window is a solution to a real problem, and understanding whose problem it solves explains why it has survived this long.
Where the window comes from
A contractor books six jobs on a Tuesday. Job two is a straight swap that takes forty minutes, or it is a corroded fitting that takes three hours, and there is no way to know which until somebody is standing in front of it. Every job after it inherits that uncertainty, and it stacks.
Faced with that, you have two choices. Promise precise times and break most of them, or promise vague ones and keep them. The four hour window is the second choice. It is honest, in its way. It is just honest about the wrong thing.
Whose problem it actually solves
The window does not reduce uncertainty. It relocates it. The contractor no longer carries the risk of being wrong about the time, because any arrival inside four hours counts as on time. The customer now carries all of it, and pays for it in a morning of unpaid waiting.
That trade was reasonable when the only tools available were a diary and a landline. Nobody could have offered better.
What it costs the contractor
It is tempting to read the window as the contractor winning, and that is not quite right either.
- Customers call during the window because it tells them so little, and every call interrupts a job.
- A wide window makes you look less organised than you are, next to a delivery app that names the minute.
- When you do arrive inside the window but late in it, you still get the review, because the customer measures from the start of the window and you measure from the end.
The window protects you from being wrong about a promise you never really wanted to make.
Why it persists
Mostly because the alternative used to be impossible. Naming a time you can keep requires knowing where the van is, how long the current job has left, and what traffic is doing between here and the next address. That was three separate unknowns until fairly recently, and no diary was going to solve it.
What replaces it
Not a narrower window. A two hour window is the same idea with the discomfort turned down slightly, and it breaks in exactly the same way when a job overruns.
What replaces it is dropping the promise of a fixed time and replacing it with a live one. Instead of "between eight and twelve", the customer sees an arrival time that updates as the day moves. When the job before theirs runs long, the number changes and they see it change. They are not told a time that later turns out to be wrong. They are shown the current truth, continuously.
This is what package tracking did to delivery, and the reason it felt like such a large change was never the map. It was that the customer stopped having to wonder.
What a live arrival time does not fix
It does not make anyone arrive sooner. A job that overruns still overruns and the day is still late. Watching a number slip from two o'clock to four is not pleasant.
It is still better, because the customer who can see four o'clock coming can go and do something useful with their afternoon. The one staring at a window that expires at noon can only sit there. Same delay, entirely different day.
